Pick the ranges for your salary, PTO, commute and hours, then your occupation, manager, team and perks (up to 26 answers), and get your job's CP (cost-performance) score out of 100: what you earn for every hour the job takes, measured against official BLS pay data for people in your occupation with your experience. 60 means break-even. See which factors drag you down and how much one change, like one more remote day, would be worth as a raise.

Work identityPaid the going rate

Out of 100: if your pay for your time exactly matches the going rate for your occupation and experience, that is 60, and manager, team and other conditions add or subtract up to 10 more. Your hour pays about 1.7 times the going rate. Converted to the same hours, your income beats about 69% of full-time U.S. workers.

Change one thing: how far your score moves

Each row changes one condition, keeps everything else the same and reruns the numbers; the percentage is the equivalent pay raise.

  1. LaterEffort: Heavy

Move under a manager who has your back

Your manager goes from "Takes a lot of managing up" to supportive. Score 69/100 → 73/100, the same as a 19.2% raise. This one is hard to negotiate; an internal transfer or team switch is more realistic.

  2. Do it nowEffort: Moderate

Leave an hour earlier every day

Your time at work goes from about 10 to about 9 hours. Score 69/100 → 71/100, the same as a 10.3% raise. Start with "non-urgent messages get answered tomorrow"; it works better than a head-on fight.

  3. This monthEffort: Moderate

Get overtime paid at time and a half

From "Nothing extra (exempt)" to paid overtime. Score 69/100 → 71/100, the same as a 9.5% raise. Log a month of extra hours before you bring it up; numbers make the conversation easier. If you're non-exempt, this isn't a favor, it's the law.

  4. LaterEffort: Moderate

Move to a team you click with

Your team goes from "Still gelling" to a friendly bunch. Score 69/100 → 71/100, the same as a 7.8% raise. Sometimes switching projects is as good as switching jobs.

  5. LaterEffort: Heavy

Cut the commute in half: move closer, change routes or ride differently

Your round trip goes from about 1 hour to about 30 minutes a day. Score 69/100 → 70/100, the same as a 4.9% raise. If you're thinking about moving, weigh this percentage directly against the rent difference.

  6. LaterEffort: Heavy

    Benchmark: a straight 10% raise

Score 69/100 → 71/100. Any change with a bigger effect than this row beats asking for a raise and is usually easier to win.

Common questions

What is the Job CP score, and what does 60 mean?

The score runs from 0 to 100. It compares what an hour of your time pays with what an hour pays for someone in your occupation, with your experience, in your metro area, working a standard week. 60 means break-even: you earn exactly the going rate for that time. Around 80 you earn about twice the going rate, and 92 and up is the top tier, Unicorn Job. On top of that, manager, team, flexibility, overtime pay and similar conditions add or take off up to 10 points.

Where does the going rate come from, and why pick an occupation?

It comes from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data: median pay for full-time wage and salary workers, then adjusted by your occupation group, your experience and the pay level of your metro area (only half of the city gap, since occupation already explains most of it). Pay differs a lot by occupation, so a nurse and a cashier shouldn't be measured against the same number. Education only comes in if you pick "Other / prefer not to say"; once you name an occupation, you are compared with people doing the same work. Your school and employer type don't change the going rate.

What does "beats about N% of full-time workers" mean, and why does a high score stop at 99?

We take your pay per hour of your time, scale it to a standard full-time week, and place that income on the BLS distribution of full-time wage and salary earnings in the U.S. (10th to 90th percentile; beyond that it is extrapolated and capped between 1% and 99%). So it compares you with other full-time U.S. employees, not with people in your occupation. It is an estimate: the survey's top earners are capped, and bonuses are mostly left out. The 0 to 100 score itself never reaches 100; the closer to the top, the harder each extra point is to earn.

I don't know my exact PTO, hours or overtime. What should I pick?

No need to look up exact numbers. Salary, PTO, hours and commute are all ranges, so pick the closest one. If you can't find your PTO or holidays, choose "Not sure": the calculator estimates a number and your report marks it as an estimate. There's also an option for when you can't remember your sick days. Overtime doesn't get its own hours question; it goes into your hours at work each day: from the time you arrive until you leave, lunch and overtime included, plus evening emails and calls. Your commute is a separate question.

I'm salaried (exempt) and get no overtime pay. Which overtime option fits?

It comes down to whether the extra hours earn you anything back. If they turn into time off, pick "Comp time". If you get neither money nor time off, pick "Nothing extra (exempt)". If you almost never work late, pick "Comp time": it's the neutral option that neither adds nor takes away, and it doesn't mean you actually get comp time. Your overtime hours aren't counted here; they're already in your hours at work each day.

Does it cost anything? Who made it?

Seeing your CP costs nothing: as soon as you finish you see your CP, your tier and the chart of what helps and hurts. The full report is exclusive and unlocks for 10 points. The calculator is built by the Type of You editorial team, and everyone is scored with the same formula and benchmarks.

What can I see without paying?

As soon as you finish, your result, key numbers and first chart are free, along with a list of every section in the full report. Decide after that.

Do I need an account?

No. Just answer and see your result; it's saved on this device first. To see it on another phone or computer, sign in and confirm moving it to your account.

How do I pay?

Checkout is handled by Waffo. Most visitors pay in US dollars; visitors in Japan pay in yen, Hong Kong in HK dollars, the eurozone in euros and the UK in pounds. Online payment isn't available in mainland China; exclusive quizzes there can be unlocked with a redeem code. The smallest top-up gives at least 30 points, enough for 3+ reports. Each payment is one-time; nothing renews automatically.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. Within 14 days of purchase you can cancel, no reason needed, for a full refund; that purchase’s points are deducted and reports unlocked with them are no longer available in full. Duplicate charges and reports that fail to unlock are sorted out even after that. See the refund policy for details.

Can I take it again?

Yes. Once you've unlocked a quiz on this device or account, retaking it and rereading the report cost nothing extra.

How accurate is it?

Your result reflects how you answered this time. It's a good way to learn about yourself and start a conversation with friends. It's for fun and self-reflection, not a psychological or medical diagnosis; if you're struggling, please talk to a professional.
