Changing jobs: when a new offer is worth it
Type of You Editorial Team8 min read

Key takeaways
- A new job offers a clearer reason to leave when it can improve the conditions that are wearing you down.
- Job satisfaction may rise after a move and then fall again; the excitement of starting over does not guarantee lasting improvement.
- A high overall quiz score can coexist with a very low well-being score, so the total cannot replace the results for each area.
- In Mexico, money owed when you resign is distinct from compensation for unjustified dismissal; those rules do not transfer to the United States.
- Employment-rights advice and mental health care address problems that a different employer may not solve on its own.
Changing jobs is worth considering when it can improve specific working conditions and you have practical support for the transition. A bigger paycheck may help; if your new manager also sends messages at midnight, you may have traded one work chat for another. Leaving also raises questions about resignation versus dismissal: Mexico’s payment rules for those situations do not carry over to the United States.
Reasons for changing jobs need to survive the next Monday
A useful reason to change jobs identifies something the next role would need to improve.
“I want to quit” might mean you have stopped learning, your commute eats the whole evening, or the company expects you to sell a product you do not believe in. Those are different problems. An employer with good training might solve the first and leave the other two untouched. The decision to stay or leave depends on your circumstances; a new opening becomes a meaningful comparison when it responds to your reason for leaving.
Maslach and Leiter’s 2016 review describes the Areas of Worklife model: workload, control, reward, community, fairness and values. Greater mismatch between a person and their job is associated with a greater likelihood of burnout. This is a research framework, not a symptom checklist for diagnosing yourself or proof that every uncomfortable situation calls for resignation.
Workload concerns demands on your time; control concerns your room to decide how work gets done. Reward includes pay and recognition, community means relationships at work, fairness concerns treatment and decisions, and values concern the gap between what matters to you and what the role requires.
For example, a project coordinator in Austin likes her coworkers but works late during every month-end close because the team is understaffed. Another team with the same workload may leave her in much the same position. “I need hours I can sustain” explains her reason for leaving without casting the entire company as the villain.

The excitement of a new job can wear off
Feeling happier when you start a job does not guarantee that the improvement will last.
Boswell, Boudreau and Tichy (2005) observed a “honeymoon-hangover” pattern in a sample of managers: satisfaction was lower before a voluntary job change, rose afterward, then declined. Boswell, Shipp, Payne and Culbertson (2009) followed 132 newcomers at four points during their first year. Satisfaction also peaked after entry and fell afterward. People who had been less satisfied with their previous job were more likely to show this pattern.
These findings do not prove that changing employers is a mistake or that everyone eventually ends up worse off. They do mean novelty is no guarantee. The relief of leaving a bad environment can be real while the conditions at the next employer still need confirming.

Levitt (2021) studied major life decisions through a coin-toss experiment. The published abstract reports that participants told by the coin to make a change were more likely to do so and reported greater decision satisfaction and happiness six months later than those told to keep things as they were. Participants had difficulty deciding, and their decisions were not limited to work. The findings cannot be generalized to everyone considering a job change. Our editorial review is limited to the published abstract; the experiment is not advice to let chance decide a resignation.
The limited editorial takeaway is that staying offers no guarantee of greater happiness either. There are options between being too afraid to move and accepting the first opening that promises a “great vibe.”
A better offer needs evidence in the everyday work
An offer is more persuasive when its conditions address your reasons for leaving than when it simply sounds appealing.
“Great culture” could mean free coffee or a manager who does not humiliate people. The difference shows up on an ordinary Tuesday, beyond the new-hire welcome photo. Specific team examples and written terms tell you more than a broad promise. Missing information matters too: something no one can explain clearly is still an unconfirmed improvement.
This comparison reflects the editorial team’s judgment. It is neither a validated scale nor a way to add up a score:
| Reason for leaving | Information about the new role | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Frequent overtime | Hours and typical workload | Who helps with urgent work |
| Tiring commute | Location and required office days | Whether the location could change |
| No growth | Duties and training | Actual promotion requirements |
| Low pay | Written pay and benefits | Whether bonuses depend on hitting targets |
| Poor treatment | Concrete examples of teamwork | Responses to mistakes or disagreement |
For example, an employee in Chicago receives a higher-paying offer with a longer commute. Hybrid work was mentioned in the interview but appears nowhere in writing. The raise is a known condition; getting more time back remains uncertain. Both facts matter, and one does not cancel out the other.
When the difficulty is your career direction, another employer may offer exactly the same kind of work. Ikigai and meaning in life concerns a different question. Changing employers and changing direction do not necessarily happen together.
A high quiz total can hide a low score in one area
A high overall happiness score can conceal a work area that needs attention.
Type of You’s Job Happiness Quiz has 20 questions across five areas: Pay & Benefits, Hours & Burnout, Growth & Future, Team & Manager, and Well-being & Balance. The structure organizes the working conditions you describe. It does not diagnose burnout or decide whether a particular offer is worth accepting. It is not medical advice.
The current scoring engine produces a reproducible example. Selecting the highest-scoring option for the first 16 questions and the lowest-scoring option for all four Well-being & Balance questions still gives a happiness score of 80 out of 100. The first four areas each score 10 out of 10; Well-being & Balance scores 1 out of 10. This is an algorithm simulation, not a statistic about real respondents.
That answer pattern gets the overall level “Living the Dream” and the type “Rich but Running on Empty.” Both names come from the quiz’s U.S. content pack. Their contrast explains why the full results matter more than one label: a good-looking average does not erase the difficulties described in the answers.
The quiz’s five areas are also distinct from the six areas in Maslach and Leiter’s model. One is this site’s way of organizing questions; the other is a research framework. Similar wording does not make the quiz a clinical tool.
Resigning involves a conversation, a handoff and documents
An organized departure separates communicating the decision, handing over open work and checking employment documents.
Once you have decided, the conversation does not have to become a trial of every bad meeting. One example is: “I’ve decided to move on, and I’d like October 23 to be my last day. I’ve organized my open tasks so we can agree on the handoff.” This is conversational wording, not a legal form. The date is illustrative and says nothing about a legally required notice period.
A handoff can include project status, promised dates, team files and the person responsible for each outstanding task. That helps distinguish a clear finish from being indefinitely on call. “I can finish the project documentation before my last day; I won’t be available to manage the work after I leave.” A boundary can be clear without turning the conversation into an argument.

If the company makes a counteroffer, your original reason for leaving still matters. A confirmed raise changes something relevant when pay was the problem. More money leaves the hours problem intact when time was what you lacked. Accepting or declining does not, by itself, make someone loyal or ungrateful.
These examples assume you are choosing to leave freely. Being fired or pressured to sign a “voluntary resignation” raises legal questions beyond an awkward conversation. In Mexico, PROFEDET provides case-specific guidance. In the United States, the appropriate employment-rights channel depends on the issue; the EEOC provides information on discrimination and related retaliation within its remit. A label on a document cannot, on its own, establish what happened.
Mexico’s finiquito and liquidación cover different situations
In Mexico, resigning voluntarily does not automatically qualify you for compensation for unjustified dismissal; this explanation does not describe U.S. rules.
In an April 2026 announcement, Michoacán’s labor conciliation center explains that a finiquito includes the proportional annual bonus, or aguinaldo, unused vacation, vacation premium, or prima vacacional, and unpaid wages. PROFEDET’s dismissal article also distinguishes outstanding amounts from rights arising from an unjustified dismissal.
In everyday Mexican usage, “liquidación” commonly refers to payments that include compensation and depend on how the employment relationship ended. A certain length of service, or HR using the word, is not enough to establish eligibility. The reason for leaving and the circumstances of the case affect what can be claimed.
| Situation in Mexico | Main distinction | What needs confirming |
|---|---|---|
| Voluntary resignation | Amounts owed: finiquito | Applicable items and amounts |
| Unjustified dismissal | May create a compensation claim | Reason for termination and applicable process |
| Pressure to sign a resignation | Whether departure was voluntary is disputed | What happened and what the documents say |
PROFEDET offers free employment-rights guidance and advice. Calculating an individual amount requires employment records and the circumstances of the case. A commercial website’s percentages or formulas cannot guarantee what a particular person is owed.
A polite goodbye letter and a document with legal effects do different jobs. Being able to explain a resignation calmly does not turn a disputed situation into routine paperwork.
A workable transition includes money and professional support
Whether leaving is feasible depends on your health needs and any period without income, as well as the next job.
For someone searching while employed, preparation may mean an updated résumé, work samples that demonstrate skills and interview times that fit existing work obligations. Once there is an offer, written conditions and a start date matter. An interview that felt promising does not provide the same certainty.
For someone leaving before finding another role, the transition budget includes accessible savings and basic expenses: rent, food, transportation, debt and family responsibilities. How long the money lasts depends on those numbers. There is no universal rule for how many months everyone ought to cover. An expected departure payment belongs in a different category from money already available.
Persistent insomnia, exhaustion that interferes with daily life or distress that continues after work can justify professional care even before you have decided whether to leave. Maslach and Leiter’s review describes a complex relationship between burnout and mental health. An informal quiz cannot answer those questions or replace an assessment.
In the United States, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline offers free, confidential support by call or text, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Immediate danger requires urgent emergency help; it is more pressing than a job search. Employment-rights questions use separate channels: the EEOC’s employee resources cover discrimination and related retaliation within the agency’s remit, rather than every kind of departure dispute.
The next step might be a conversation about hours, an offer with confirmed terms or an appointment with a mental health professional. A move connected to something specific that needs to improve gives you a clearer direction, with less riding on the hope that the next company will be perfect.

FAQ
How do you know when it is time to change jobs?
Specific, persistent problems offer a firmer basis for comparison than one exhausting day. Hours, pay, growth and how you are treated can each matter. If a problem remains after a conversation and there is no confirmed improvement, a job search has a concrete purpose. Harm to your health or threats may make professional support more urgent than finding the next role.
How do you tell your boss you are quitting?
A clear conversation can cover your decision, proposed last day and handoff arrangements. For example: “I’ve decided to move on, and I’d like October 23 to be my last day. I’ve organized my open tasks so we can agree on the handoff.” This is sample wording, not a legal document. The date is an example, not a statement about a required notice period.
What is the difference between finiquito and liquidación in Mexico?
Mexico’s Michoacán labor conciliation center explains that voluntary resignation still involves settling amounts owed, including proportional annual bonus, unused vacation and vacation premium. Compensation for unjustified dismissal has a different basis. The amounts and applicable items need case-specific advice; a commercial calculator cannot replace that. These are Mexican employment terms, not rules for a U.S. resignation.
Is it a bad idea to quit without another job lined up?
There is no answer that fits everyone. Searching while employed keeps your paycheck coming, but severe exhaustion can make that difficult. Leaving without an offer involves balancing basic expenses, accessible savings and health needs. An estimated departure payment or an interview that went well is less certain than money already available or a confirmed offer.
