Rising Sign Calculator

Your rising sign (ascendant) is the zodiac sign coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It needs your birth date, an accurate birth time and your birthplace. Your Sun, Moon and full chart are calculated at the same time.

The 12 rising signs

What a rising sign is

As the Earth turns, all twelve signs rise over the eastern horizon in about a day, roughly one every two hours. The one rising when you were born is your ascendant, and it marks the start of your first house.

Astrologers read the ascendant as your outward style: the first impression you make, how you dress and talk, and how you handle a room full of strangers. If the Sun is who you are becoming, the rising sign is the coat you wear out the door.

Why the birth time has to be right

The ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes, and some signs rise in barely an hour at US latitudes. Being off by fifteen minutes can put you in the next sign, which is why the result flags an ascendant close to a sign boundary.

Birth certificates usually record the minute. If you only know "early morning", try the earliest and latest likely times and compare. Without any birth time, the rising sign cannot be determined.

A rising sign that differs from your Sun sign is normal

People born on the same day usually share a Sun sign but can have any of twelve rising signs. If you have never felt like your Sun sign, the rising sign is often what people meet first.

FAQ

How is the rising sign calculated?

Your local birth time is converted to Universal Time using your birthplace time zone (including daylight saving time). From that moment and your latitude and longitude, the calculator finds the point of the zodiac on the eastern horizon: your ascendant.

Which matters more, the rising sign or the Moon sign?

They describe different things. The rising sign is about first impressions and how you meet new situations; the Moon is about feelings and what you need in private. Reading all three placements together gives a fuller picture than any one alone.

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

No. The ascendant changes sign about every two hours, so without a time it cannot be pinned down. The calculator will still show your Sun, Moon and planet signs.
