What a birth chart is
A birth chart (natal chart) is a map of the sky at the moment you were born, seen from your birthplace: where the Sun, Moon and eight planets sat in the zodiac, divided into twelve houses by the horizon and meridian. "My sign" in everyday talk is just one point on it, the Sun.
People born on the same day usually share a Sun sign, but the Moon moves more than ten degrees a day and the rising sign changes about every two hours, so a different time or place gives a different chart.
Sun, Moon and Rising: the Big Three
The Sun is who you are becoming, the Moon is how you react when tired, upset or relaxed, and the rising sign is the first impression and how you walk into new situations. Having three different signs is common, which is why many people feel they do not match their Sun sign.
The rising sign needs an accurate birth time and place; a difference of fifteen minutes can change it.
Time zones, daylight saving and birthplace
A chart starts by converting your clock time to Universal Time. US daylight saving rules have changed many times since the 1940s, and some places, such as most of Arizona, do not observe it. The calculator applies the historical rules for your birthplace automatically and shows the offset it used.
Your birthplace sets the latitude and longitude: longitude moves the ascendant and midheaven, latitude changes the house sizes. Choosing the nearest sizable city is accurate to within a few minutes of ascendant movement.
House systems: Placidus and Whole Sign
Placidus divides the sky by time, so houses come in different sizes. It is the default on most websites and software, and here too. Whole Sign makes the entire rising sign the first house and each following sign the next house; it is the older method and always works at high latitudes.
Planet signs are the same in both systems; only the houses can change. Near the polar circles Placidus can fail, and the calculator switches to Porphyry houses, as Astro.com does, with a note.
How it is calculated and how accurate it is
Planet positions come from astronomy-engine, an open-source astronomy library (MIT license), as apparent positions on the ecliptic of date. The ascendant, midheaven and houses are computed from standard spherical astronomy. Before launch, 25 test charts, including daylight saving time, midnight births, the southern hemisphere and the Arctic, were checked against the Swiss Ephemeris used by Astro.com: planets, ascendant and house cusps all agreed within one arcminute, far less than a one-minute error in birth time.
FAQ
How do I find my Big Three?
Enter your birth date, birth time and birthplace, then press Calculate. The first card shows your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. Without a birth time the rising sign cannot be determined.
Why does my Moon sign differ from another site?
The Moon changes signs about every two and a half days. If it changed on your birthday, a missing birth time or a wrong time zone or daylight saving setting gives a different result. This calculator handles daylight saving time from your birthplace and tells you when the Moon may be in either of two signs.
I was born on a cusp. What is my Sun sign?
The Sun enters each sign at a slightly different time every year, so dates like March 20 or 21 depend on the year and hour. Enter your birth time to get your exact Sun sign.
Which planets are shared by a whole generation?
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move slowly, staying in one sign for seven to more than twenty years, so people of the same age usually share them. Their house placement says more about you personally.
Do you store my birth details?
Not unless you choose to. The chart is calculated in your browser, and your date, time and place are never put in the URL. They reach our server only if you sign in and press Save with your consent, so you can reopen the chart later; you can delete saved charts at any time. When you search for a city, your browser downloads only a small slice of the city list.
Can a birth chart predict the future?
We treat astrology as a cultural tradition and a tool for self-reflection. A chart describes tendencies and themes, not events. For health, relationship, money or legal decisions, rely on professional advice and your own judgment.
Birth chart write-ups are original interpretations of astrological tradition for self-reflection and entertainment. They are not medical, psychological, financial or legal advice. Planet positions are calculated with astronomy-engine and agree with the Swiss Ephemeris within one arcminute.
