The zodiac year starts at Lunar New Year, so birthdays from January to mid-February often belong to the previous year’s sign.

How your Chinese zodiac sign is calculated

Your sign follows the Chinese lunar year, which by folk custom starts on Lunar New Year. That date moves between late January and mid-February, so if you were born early in the year, you may belong to the previous year’s animal. BaZi astrology uses a different cutoff, the solar term Lichun (around February 4), so the two can disagree for early-February birthdays.

Each year also has a heavenly stem that sets its element and yin or yang: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. That’s why there are Fire Horses and Water Horses.

Secret friends, trine allies, opposites, harm and punishment

The 12 animals map onto the 12 earthly branches, and tradition fixes how each pair relates. Trine allies are four groups of three signs; secret friends are six pairs that quietly complete each other; opposites sit directly across the wheel; harm and punishment describe pairs prone to misunderstandings or power struggles.

These are long-standing cultural ideas, useful as a lens on how two temperaments differ. Easy pairs still take effort, and so-called opposites often balance each other once they understand each other’s pace.

FAQ

I was born in January. Which year’s sign am I?

It depends on when Lunar New Year fell. In 2026 it fell on February 17, so anyone born from January 1 to February 16, 2026 is still a Snake; from February 17 on, a Horse.

Does the sign change at Lunar New Year or at Lichun?

Folk custom, and this calculator, use Lunar New Year. BaZi uses Lichun (around February 4). They only differ for birthdays between late January and mid-February.

Can opposite signs be together?

Of course. “Opposites” describes very different tempos that need more communication and teamwork. It doesn’t decide whether two people belong together.

What is the compatibility based on?

The traditional branch relationships (trine allies, secret friends, opposites, harm, punishment), plus our own notes on how the two temperaments combine. It’s cultural entertainment, not a psychological test.

The Chinese zodiac is a cultural tradition offered for entertainment. It can’t predict relationships or life outcomes; big decisions deserve real conversations and, where relevant, professional advice.
